Our Review

Tagged was created in 2004 by two entrepreneurs: Greg Tseng and Johann Schleier-Smith. They wanted to create a "Yahoo!" for teens, or maybe even the next MTV. It has over 300 million registered users combined with sister brand Hi5 under parent group "The Meet Group". The purpose of the social networking service is to connect people for the purpose of friendship or dating.

Tagged is widely commended for continuously growing and not dying out during the rise of Facebook.

  • Tagged has over 100 million original users while about 230 million were acquired from Hi5
  • Has strong retention and engagement among the African American community in the US
  • More members in the 35-54 age group than others
  • 400,000 weekly active users from all over the world

During its acquisition of Hi5 in 2011, Tagged also absorbed over 230 million of its users. Which means that only 1/3rd of the current user base in Tagged actually signed up on the website. African-Americans dominate the site, making up 42% of the members, followed by Caucasians at 41%, then Hispanics by 12%. Tagged was originally a teen-only site and surprisingly, they stuck around. 11% of all Tagged users are teens. In the graph below, we combined them with the 18 - 34 age group. Almost half of Tagged users access the site through the mobile app while the other half uses the desktop website.

How to Sign Up for Tagged

Tagged Registration
  • Gives you an option to find email contacts who already have Tagged accounts
  • Email verification required
  • Only one photo needs to be uploaded
  • Can be through Facebook or Google account

The registration is relatively quick and easy. You just need to provide vital information like your name, gender, location, email address, location, and photo. After that, your account is already created. After verifying your email by copying and pasting a code that they sent to your email inbox, you can fully access the website (as much as a free member can). You can browse your feed for posts, play the games, and message other members. You may edit your profile later to provide more insight into who you are.

Making Contact on Tagged

Tagged Messaging
  • Matches are shown through the game/feature Meet Me
  • Free users can send, receive, and read messages
  • All members can send messages for free

Members can send messages to others even without a premium membership. Unlike the other websites we've reviewed here in our website, dating doesn't seem to be the main agenda in Tagged. Your daily matches isn't the primary thing on your homepage. Instead, it's the feed which is constantly updated by posts from everyone (or just your friends, depending on how you set your preferences). The matching process is in a different tab that you have to explicitly look for. Even then, your matches aren't based on any algorithm. It's based on your search criteria which is composed of:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Country
  • City
  • Proximity

Tagged Profile Quality

Tagged Profile
  • Profile photo can be an animated GIF
  • Profiles can have YouTube videos displayed on the side
  • The theme of your profile can be modified (by choosing a "skin")
  • There are several actions you can do on a profile to interact with that user
  • The profiles are not very detailed
  • The profile information can be changed later
  • Profile pictures are visible to everyone for free

The profile pictures can be animated GIFs which you can download anywhere on the internet. You can set a theme for your profile through the Skins feature. The Skins, available within the website (or you can create your own), can change your header, background, font, paragraph headings, and more. The skins have categories of

  • Basic colours
  • Girly
  • Nature/scenic
  • Sports
  • Themes

The premise of this feature is unique, but that's because no one has utilised this style since the downfall of Friendster many years ago. Moving GIFs as backgrounds look distracting, and brightly-coloured fonts are just downright tacky.

Tagged App

Tagged App Profile
  • 53% of members prefer the mobile app while 47% use the desktop
  • Average 4 stars on the app stores
  • 10 million downloads

The app has more of a dating service feel than the website. In the app, the "Meet Me" feature is the main highlight whereas in the website the games seemed to be the priority. Also, the app is better designed than the website. The customisable profiles with "skins" are disabled in the app. When you view someone's profile, you'll find the standard font and a clean, white background. The functions, which were jam-packed on the homepage of the website, are properly arranged in the app. It has over 10 million downloads.

Tagged Real Life Review

"Pets is a really entertaining game and I've managed to buy the most pets in a few days thanks to dedication (and paying real cash). I mostly use it for fun. It's a great place to waste time without feeling like I'd be judged because I'm playing against fellow adults. Never really got a date there but that's not what I use the site for. The profiles throw me back to early 2006 Myspace. Kind of a turn off but again, I'm not here to look at profiles. LOL."Male Businessman (34)

Design and Usability

The website's features are crowded and organised without a thought as to which one would be the members' main purpose. The presence of games makes it feel less like an online dating website and more like a social network for people of all ages. On the main page you are bombarded with potential matches, pets you should buy on the game, and a feed with constant updates from members. It can get overwhelming. The posts and photos dangerously lean towards pornographic, which is worrying because there are a lot of minors on this site. The website's censorship and overall monitoring seems very lax.

You can cancel your subscription through the website itself (under "Account") or through the iOS and Android app stores. The premium subscription lets you see who viewed your profile, when your message was read, and get priority customer service report. You can buy Gold (the in-app currency) to access more features in the Pets game.

Special Features

Pets

Pets is a game that lets you buy and sell other members. You yourself can be bought and sold too. You start off with a value of about 12 million Qd (the currency in the game). You can buy other members for the price of 0.01 Qd, which can be really easy for you, but very easy for others to buy your pets from you. As you buy more pets, your value increases and you get cash bonuses. If you're bought by someone, your value will increase by 10%. Those are the basics. It's a buy-and-sell trade game, and your value only really decreases if you become inactive in the game.

LUV

LUV are technically "gifts" that you can give and receive from someone. Each user gets 10 LUV everyday. Every time you give and receive LUV, you'll earn points. Also, if you give someone LUV, they'll get additional LUV to give to someone else. For each LUV you receive, the bar underneath your photo in your profile increases. The fuller the bar, the more LUV you've received from various members. You basically get bragging rights and show everyone else how popular and loved you are in Tagged.

Editor's Conclusion

If you read online articles about Tagged, you're extremely likely to find mentions of the site surprisingly managing to survive during the era of Facebook when Friendster, Myspace, and others didn't.  However, during our test we found that Facebook (or other social websites) isn't the main weakness of Tagged; it's main weakness is itself. Tagged started out as a "social discovery website" but eventually tried to step into the online dating industry. Here is where the problem lies. The transition wasn't done properly. The website is now an awkward mix of a dating service with underage members and a gaming website with adult members looking for love. The customer help service is substandard, and the premium package only really gives you one useful add-on. If you want an overall better dating website, try out our Casual Dating service category.
