Released in February 2014, Happn is a location-based online dating mobile application that connects members who are geographically close to each other– particularly, those who have passed by each other already. With over 50 million users worldwide, the dating app matches members who have crossed paths in real life within the 250-meter proximity.

It is a free app that can be downloaded by iOS, Android or Windows users. However, to fully utilise its functions, you must subscribe to their premium membership.

There are two easy ways to create your account with Happn. You may link it to your Facebook account or register through your mobile number. With just a few information, you will be able to sign up.

These include your name, date of birth, and gender. Other data about your work, education and a description of yourself will also be asked but are not required. Before you can proceed, you will need to identify whether you want to cross paths with men, women or both.

After creating your account, you may already use your account's full functionality. Unlike other dating apps, Happn does not hold new accounts for verification and approval.

Happn shows your matches based on the proximity and preferences you have set. Unlike other apps, Happn does not have a search function. Instead, it shows your matches based on the identified criteria– proximity and preferences of the user.

For security purposes, you can only send likes to other members. You may not message them unless they also send you a 'like'. This ensures that members only get to chat with people that they are interested in. Once two members send a like to each other, those members get a "crush" which is similar to a match.

To shorten the process, you can view other members who sent you a 'like'. In that case, you may get a "crush" and send a message instantly. This can be availed through a premium subscription.

'Hello' is another feature to connect with other members. Unlike the Like function, Hello is not a secret action. A member can send a Hello to anyone that appears on their timeline and let them know that they want to start a conversation. It also has a new video call feature that is free to use as long as you don't exceed using it for five minutes.

    There is not much to see on a member's profile. Happn will only show a few information– your picture, name, age, gender, work and education, last active date, distance and a description of yourself. If you purchase a premium, you will be able to hide some of this information. You may upload up to nine photos to your account directly or by syncing your photos from your Facebook or Instagram account.

    Providing useful information and photos that reflect your personality and interests are helpful for other members to know you more, and probably, like you. Unlike Tinder, which makes use of the swipe function, Happn does not require members to decide whether to like your match or not immediately. Other users have the chance to browse your profile first, so make sure you have a good one.

    Although the app does not verify accounts, which makes ultimately leads to higher risk of running into fake accounts, users are allowed to report or block suspicious accounts for their privacy and safety.

    If you are concerned about privacy, you may stop the Happn app from tracking for a certain time by turning on the "Invisibility Mode" with a premium subscription. However, unlike Tinder Places, there is no option for the users to block certain places such as your home, office or gym, which is inadvisable for safety purposes.

    Nevertheless, you have the choice to schedule invisibility when you do not want to cross paths with other members. Pausing your account is another option, but your crushes will no longer be able to track you and see your messages.

    Happn app finds users matches based on the provided preference and location. You can let other users know what you are up to by posting status updates on your profile. It is a free feature that you can use anytime. You may indicate whether you want to grab a bite, get a drink, catch a movie, go out, go for a walk or run.

    This is the newest feature that Happn can offer. It lets the users give a more personal touch on how they communicate and connect with others. To use this, the members have to choose something about the other member based on his/ her profile and ask a personalized question based on it.

    Hello

    Let other members know that you want to talk– send a Hello! Each member has ten free Hellos once they sign up. Once it runs out, you will have to purchase through a premium subscription.

    Voice Messages

    Happn does not offer video chat to its users. Nevertheless, you may send a voice message to your crushes.

    My Music Selection

    Sync Happn to your Spotify account. If you are a music person, show your personality better by sending tracks to your "crushes." 

    Crush Time

    This in-app game shows four members that you have recently crossed paths with. You will then have to choose who among those members like you. Get it correctly to be able to send a message to that user instantly. If you have guessed it wrong, a 'like' will automatically be sent to the user that you chose.

    happn is planning to release an audio feature this September 2021 in which users will allow to hear a match’s voice before making a connection. This new feature aims to provide a more immersive and sensory online dating experience.

    Similarities Badge

    This feature will detect common interests that you share with a member or a match. Sharing passions and interests with matches helps start meaningful conversations so always check out this section added on the profiles in a badge form.

    Hub

    The "Hub" allows users to have more control over their potential matches. The Hub space can be accessed on the happn app and is split into four sections: Discover, Play, Explore, and Meet. The Discover section provides certified, online, and newly registered profiles. The Play section offers the CrushTime game, while the Explore section features a map system that shows potential matches users have come across in real life. Finally, the Meet section allows users to filter according to profile characteristics such as passions and romantic preferences.

    Ready to Date

    The ‘Ready to Date’ tool lets users know when their match is ready to meet offline. The new feature will appear on the conversation page of two users. When an individual feels ready to meet the other offline, they can have this preference registered on the app.

    CrushPoints allows users to add their favourite places to their profile and discover those of their Crushes, based on 6 categories: events, bars, restaurants, sports, culture and outdoors.
