Our Review:

Pure Review May 2019

Apps of today have become so innovative that people have grown vastly dependent on them to do chores and a bunch of other things. Whether it be to order food at 1 am, buy groceries online, book rental cars or taxis, make a reservation for housing accommodations, stream favourite shows and music, there is an app for all that and more.

Apparently, there is also an app that claims to help you find instant and anonymous casual sex partners. If Uber had a baby with Snapchat, Pure is a hookup app that has one simple premise, and that is to deliver dates on demand. Contrary to other existing dating apps, this one does not promise longevity or even actual relationships, for that matter. If you are looking for a life partner, then we'd strongly advise you to search for other dating sites.

First launched in October 2014, Pure has been deemed as strong competition for Tinder since its concept makes finding casual sex partners quicker and easier. The main idea for Pure is about self-destructing profiles that will encourage more instantaneous hookups while maintaining anonymity and discretion.

A user is only given an hour to locate and chat up others before their profile disintegrates. During that one hour, the user sends a "georequest" for casual sex. Under that time limit, you are given potential matches which are near or within your location that you can chat up, get contact details from, and set up a date with. If you want to try Pure again, you'd have to create a whole new profile.

This innovative concept coupled with aesthetically pleasing user interface has made Pure an app to be reckoned with. However, does the dating app deliver its promises and get you actual legit dates or is it just a scammy site underneath all the glamour and prestige? We took a closer look at this app and explored its features, dating possibilities, prices, and more.

To know all about Pure and see if it is the right app for you, read on our review below.

  • Download the app on Google Play Store or Apple App Store first to get started
  • It takes 2-3 minutes to register
  • You should grant permission to let the app process your data
  • Payment information is asked right away before you can proceed
  • Need to create a new account every time you use the app
  • GPS must be turned on to be able to use this app
Pure Registration

To get started, download the app on your mobile device first. The app is available on Google Play and the App Store. It is completely free to download, but there are in-app purchases. It would take approximately 2-3 minutes to register. Take note that profiles are temporary and deleted after the 1-hour time limit. Therefore, you'd have to create a new profile whenever you'd want to use Pure.

To create an account, open the app and grant the app permission to process your data. This includes your email, phone number, and payment information. Since profiles are deleted after a certain amount of time, the app would need to collect your personal data to finetune the user experience for you.

After allowing Pure access, you'd have to choose if you'd want to register via phone or email. After that, you must select your gender, email address or phone number, verify your email or number, choose if you are creating a new account or an old one, and who you are looking for.

Once those are set, you would have to turn your location settings on. The app heavily relies on GPS to suggest nearby users in your area. You must upload a good photo of yourself. Being a visual app, the app only asks for your gender, sexual preference, photo, and nothing else. Therefore, you remain entirely anonymous. You'd only have your photo to attract possible interactions.

Profile Information

  • Profiles are temporary and self-destructing
  • Profiles are deleted as soon as the one-hour time limit is up
  • There are no personal details on profiles other than your selfie
  • You can still change your selfie if you like
  • You must keep on creating new profiles to keep using Pure
  • Has very minimalistic design
  • Relies heavily on your selfie instead of personality
Pure Profile

The feature that makes Pure stand out from the rest is its self-destructing profiles. After creating an account, you'd only have an hour to use it, locate other users near your area, like them, and if they like you back, chat with them and maybe, discuss a meeting arrangement. Once the time limit is up, the profile, along with your messages, are deleted permanently, You'd have to create a new profile to use the app again.

Other than a selfie, your name and any other personal details will not be displayed on your profile. Therefore, you'd have to make sure to have one heck of a display photo to get noticed. Remember, the chat window only pops up when the "like" is mutual.

Having temporary profiles that display zero details can be both advantageous and disadvantageous. While it is one way of helping you remain almost anonymous, other users would also be anonymous as well. It is better to take precaution and thoroughly vet your matches well before you go meeting up with them in real life.

Contacting Members

  • There's no way of expressing your personality other than a selfie
  • Your profile becomes a meeting request which will be shown on anyone near your area using the app at the same time
  • Hit "Yes" on suggested profiles if they interest you
  • If the like is mutual, a chat window pops up
  • All your correspondence, along with your profile, is deleted after an hour
  • Connecting with others can be a game of luck
  • The time limit and location can restrict your activity
Pure Contact

Pure, like its minimalistic design, has very minimalistic features. Your profile turns into a meeting request which is broadcast to other users using the app near your location. This is when the luck favours those with the right timing and in the right location. You must be in an area where there are lots of Pure users. Also, with the time limit, there's considerably lower activity. Best time it during "peak hours," whenever that may be in your area.

While its concept is fresh and trendy, you can only contact others through basic chat. This app observes discretion with its temporary profiles. But to actually contact other users, you'd need to mutually like each other. That's the only way a chat box will be activated.

If you are in the area where there's not that many Pure users or low activity, it's best to skip this one since you'd have to fill in your credit card information right away upon signing up. However, if you are just plain old lucky to be in an area where there are loads of Pure users, and you wish to have easy and casual fun, this app is made just for you.

Design and Usability

Pure's strengths lie not only in its concept but also in its design. The mobile app's unique and trendy branding is quite strong. It looks very appealing for young adults with its white background, black font, and minimalistic cartoons. Pure, true to its name, looks clean and pristine. It does not bog down the users with unnecessary animations or unorganised design.

Also, the app has a straightforward premise, and it translates well in its usability. Pure does not provide too many buttons for its users to get lost on. Rather, the app's user interface is pretty straightforward and neat. You wouldn't be intimidated in using this app since it built to be very intuitive for people to navigate.

Field Test

"I was really intrigued by Pure. There's something about the app's branding that just speaks to me. Being a 20-something young professional living his best life in a big city, you'd know why this app can be pretty enticing for me to use. The premise really got to me: anonymous sex partners, disintegrating profiles, and a time limit. Where do I sign up? However, what put me off was the app's limited reach. There's barely any activity in the app. Only a handful of people use this app in my area which is a huge bummer. The idea was great, but sadly, it can also be pretty limiting."

Summary

Pure is a dating app to look out for. With a modern minimalistic design and unique concept, it will surely entice a lot of young adults seeking casual and instant sex. Its self-destructing profiles and one-hour time limit are sure to put extra spice in your dating experience.  Women having complete free access to the app is the added cherry on top.

However, there are few setbacks to Pure. One of those is outright asking for your credit card information before you can access the app. Even if there's a three-day trial, you cannot proceed unless you've filled out the payment information.

Another potential weakness is its limited availability to other countries and locations. Since it relies solely on GPS, if no one within your vicinity is actively using the app, you wouldn't be able to get in touch with anybody.

Lastly, while the time limit ensures data security and adds a unique flavor to the site, you'd often have to be at the right time and the right place for this to effectively work. Otherwise, you'd end in a ghost town.

Despite all that, if 100% no-strings-attached, random, and discreet sexual encounters are what you are looking for and you happen to live within the area where there is a high app activity volume, Pure would be the perfect way to sate your sexual appetite. Otherwise, you're better off checking out these other dating apps we've also reviewed.

FAQ

General Information

What is Pure?

Pure is a hookup app that helps you spontaneously meet anonymous people in your area for casual sex. All you need is a selfie. Profiles are deleted in an hour, and there is no need to link any social media account.

How do I start on Pure?

To get started, download the app, open it, and select your gender. If you’re a female, the app is free. If you’re a male, you’ll be prompted to enter your payment information. You will have a free trial before your subscription begins.

How does Pure work?

First, add a photo of yourself using your camera or saved photos. When you submit your photo, it becomes a meeting request, which appears in the app’s feed to people in your area. It will appear for one hour and then is automatically deleted along with any correspondence between you and other users. You can delete your photo at any time by hitting the “My Request” text at the bottom of your screen, and clicking “Delete Now”.

You will also see photos of people who want to meet in your area. If you’re interested in someone in the photo feed, you can hit "Yes" right away. That person will be instantly notified of your interest, and if it's mutual, a chat window will open up for the two of you.

Once you are matched, you are given one hour to chat, get to know each other better, and arrange a meeting. After an hour, the chat and it’s contents are automatically erased, as if nothing ever happened.

Subscription and Cancellation

What is a Trial?

Pure uses Google and Apple’s standard trial and subscription system. While female users can join Pure for free, male users have a three-day free trial.

When the trial period is over, the monthly payment for the subscription will be automatically charged to your account. You can cancel the trial at any time. You can also cancel the automatically-renewed subscription.

How can I cancel a subscription or trial on Pure?

You cannot cancel your subscription or trial through the actual app. You must cancel any subscription or trial through the App Store or Google Play Store.

After canceling your subscription, you will be able to use the app for the remaining days that you have paid for. When your subscription expires, it will not be renewed. You can opt back in at any time.

Canceling your subscription will not retroactively refund subscription payments, and previously charged subscription fees cannot be refunded based on cancellation date. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel your subscription either. Subscriptions must be cancelled directly through the store.

If I delete the Pure app, will my subscription/trial be cancelled?

Deleting an application does not cancel the subscription or trial. You must cancel the subscription and trial on Google Play or App Store.

How do I change my payment information on Pure?

If you’re using an Apple device:

  • Go to your phone’s Settings
  • Tap iTunes & App Store
  • Tap your Apple ID
  • Select “View Apple ID”
  • Select “payment information”

  • Tap “Add Payment Method” or “Edit Payment Method”

If prompted, sign in to Google Wallet and follow the instructions.

Can I get a refund of the money I spent on Pure? How do I do it?

If you are using an Apple device, all refunds are handled by Apple. If you wish to request a refund, go to iTunes, click on your Apple ID, select “Purchase History," find the transaction, and hit “Report a Problem.”

If you are using an Android phone, send the receipt for your payment from Google Play to android@getpure.org with your order number, and the Pure team will process your request as soon as possible. You can find the order number in the order confirmation email or by logging in to Google Wallet.

Usability

How do I delete my Pure account?

The app does not create permanent accounts for the users. Your chats are removed from the servers after an hour and are not stored anywhere. The app only has your picture, information about your subscription, and your user ID which are all encrypted.

If you do not want to use the application anymore, simply remove Pure from your device, and unsubscribe from the App Store or Google Play Store

My Pure account is blocked, what should I do?

Being blocked on the app can occur because of a violation of its policies. The photo must be of your face. Violation of this rule, or others, may lead to a ban.

If you had been banned and hadn't violated any policy, you can email the app's moderators at feedback@getpure.org and they'll review your case.

I submitted the wrong photo on Pure. How do I change it?

Hit the X at the top left of the photo to add a new picture. If you’ve already submitted a meeting request, click “My Request” and delete your request. You can then submit another photo.

I'm not getting notified when someone wants to meet me.

Pure needs permission to send you notifications. If you accidentally denied the app access to send you notifications, go to the phone settings, find 'notifications', and make sure the app is allowed access. If this doesn't solve the issue, you can try reinstalling the app.

Why is Pure stuck on "Looking for people nearby"?

Try restarting or force quitting the app. On your device, go to Settings and make sure the GPS (location services) is enabled. You can also try turning location services off and back on. You may have to open the Maps app for your GPS to pick up your current location. If the issue persists, just wait a few hours and try again.

Security

Why does Pure need access to my location?

It needs access to your location to submit a photo for a meeting request for people in your area. If you accidentally denied the app access to your location, go to the phone settings, find ‘Privacy’, select ‘Location Services’, and make sure the app is allowed access.

Why does Pure need access to my camera or photos?

It needs permission to access your photos (or camera) to submit a photo for a meeting request. If you accidentally denied the app access to your photos, go to the phone settings, find 'Privacy', select 'Photos', and make sure the app is allowed access.
